One Line on the Election

November 4th, 2008

I can remember the day, about a year ago, when I read “Goodbye to All That: Why Obama Matters” in the December Atlantic and began thinking, “Maybe this guy is worth supporting” but later, while sharing my enthusiasm with friends and family, I typically added a woeful “It would be nice, but he’ll never win the nomination, let alone the election,” which was often met with “True that” until, that is, he delivered a history textbook-worthy speech on race; until he did in fact win the nomination; until Palin; until the country went tits up; until the polls, and The Poll, began reporting a substantial lead for the Illinois Senator; and until it became clear that an Obama victory would be the likely outcome of this mess, the first of which I’ve spent way too much time sweating over—but not until he takes the stage and starts yet another Yes We Can chant and thanks his supporters and says a kind word or two about his weary and beaten opponents will we be saying much today.
