As evidenced in his recent post about Chris Matthews, renowned reporter, speechwriter and lover(?) Hendrick Hertzberg follows the New Yorker’s adorable diaeresis-on-double-vowel style rule even while blogging: “The “reëlection” campaign, as we liked to call it, was upon us, and, frankly, most of us were exhausted, not to say played out.” You hear that? It’s the sound of the Antiquated Grammar Obelisk grinding against the New Media Rocket Ship.
